Machine components with moving parts require different types of greases and lubricants to operate smoothly and efficiently. So, before you lubricate your machinery, you must pick the best grease or lubricant that suits your application. Doing this ensures you don’t use the wrong lubricant for the wrong application. Otherwise, your machine might fail.

What are the different types of greases and lubricants?

Various types of lubricants have different physical features, including oil, grease, dry, and penetrating lubricants. However, oil and grease are the most common lubricants in everyday applications. On the other hand, dry lubricants are super slippery and suitable for applications that don’t require liquid oils or grease.

Are you having trouble choosing the best lubricant for your machine? Here are the different types of greases and lubricants and their applications. Click To Tweet

  2. Grease
  3. Penetrating Lubricant
  4. Dry Lubricant

1) Oil

Oil lubricants are generally thin but come with different viscosity. You can use oil if you plan to lubricate hinges and bearings. Lubricant oil is also suitable for sharpening blades and tool maintenance. However, don’t use oil lubricants on parts that look so dirty or rusty. Instead, consider cleaning the surface or removing the rust before oiling it.

2) Grease

Grease is a mixture of oil and thickening agents. It has similar lubricating properties as oil, but its stickiness and texture make it adhere to surfaces better. Due to its high viscosity, you can use grease on chains, linkages, gears, and bearings as it can stick on surfaces for longer durations. However, don’t use grease on fast-moving machine parts.

3) Penetrating Lubricant

A penetrating lubricant can infiltrate tiny cracks to add lubrication and break up rust. Although it’s not long-lasting lubrication, you can use it to loosen stuck bolts or nuts and remove adhesive stickers or chewing gums. Unfortunately, you can’t use penetrating lubricant on high-speed wheel bearings because it doesn’t last long.

4) Dry Lubricant

You can opt for a dry lubricant if you don’t want to use oil or grease because they attract dirt and dust. It comprises tiny graphite particles that make it super slippery. You can use it on threaded rods, hinges, and locks. The lubricant is also ideal for tiny parts that grease can gunk up during usage. Besides, it’s good for points under extreme pressure.
