You may not have heard about all types of lubrication systems. However, you know the function of lubricants: reducing friction between moving parts rubbing or sliding against one another. But for the oil lubricant to work efficiently, it must circulate in the lubrication system.

What are some different types of lubrication systems?

Oil lubricants are vital in enhancing the performance of machine parts. Besides reducing friction, they can act as a coolant to prevent thermal expansion between machine components.

However, there are different types of lubrication systems, including:

  1. Lubrication Pump
  2. Single Line Resistance 
  3. Single Point 
  4. Dual Line
  5. Grease Gun

1) Lubrication Pump

A lubrication pump comes with a built-in metering device and reservoir to help supply lubrication to the vital parts of a machine. You can readily connect it to the machine’s supply and feed lines. However, the pump has a relatively lower lubricant capacity to supply small lubricant volumes.

2) Single Line Resistance

This lubrication system comprises a central pump that supplies a lubricant to single or multiple supply lines that are parallel to one another (multi-line systems). Single-line resistance is a low-pressure lubrication system that works in light and medium machinery. It can dispense a lubricant to 100 lubrication points.

3) Single Point

As the name suggests, a single-point (SP) lubrication system distributes a lubricant to one lubrication point. Therefore, this system is effective when a few lubrication points are in a wide area. Besides, the SP system is automatic and comes in compact sizes comprising a small reservoir tank, metering devices, and feed lines.

4) Dual Line

The lubrication systems operate in two alternating cycles. In the first cycle, the lubricant gets pumped to the supply line from the reservoir. It will then move the injectors’ inlet and discharge pistons in one direction, including the lubricant. Notably, the injectors’ arrangement allows them to be shared by two supply lines. Once the preset pressure is achieved, the system will relieve the first supply line and pump the lubricant to the second supply line.

5) Grease Gun

Grease guns help to dispense grease to lubrication points in a machine and are ideal for maintaining equipment and machinery in industrial plants. First, however, you must add the lubricant to an enclosed canister and load it on the gun. Then, depending on your grease gun’s design, you can dispense the lubricant manually, pneumatically, or electrically.

Oil Based Lubricants

Oil is a liquid-based lubricant with varying weights and viscosity. You can use oil lubricants on hinges, bearings, tool maintenance, and sharpening blades. It’s ideal for lubricating parts without resistance. We recommend using this type of lubricant on clean equipment. Otherwise, that may affect the moving part by causing extra friction.

Penetrating Lubricants

If you want to loosen rusty bolts that have accumulated debris for years, we recommend using a penetrating lubricant. The lubricants don’t offer long-lasting lubrication, as they are only suitable for infiltrating tiny cracks and breaking up rust. But, you shouldn’t use penetrating oils in place of other lubricants as they can’t last long.

Grease Lubricants

Grease is a mixture of oil, a lithium-based soap (thickener), and more lubricants, such as PTFE (Teflon). Its stickiness and texture allow it to adhere to surfaces better, making it ideal for heavyweight applications, such as gears, bearings, chains, and linkages. But, don’t use grease on fine or fast-moving mechanisms where thick grease might create more resistance.
